Cyto says 'the soning punishment was never used when a father would have to initiate it because they would always have mercy on their son'
Cyto says 'even though it was i within their right for the crime of disobedience and disrespect, this is or seems similar to what God does for us'
Cyto says 'He's not willing that any should perish, though sometimes he needsded to kill some of us'
Miriam nods.
Cyto says 'the penalty for disobedience and disrespect is death and we all dserve it but a father is/should show mercy'
Cyto says 'however in the roman err or was it greek culture there was this doctrine of patria something or other sorry ofor lack of specificity but they believed that not only did the father have absolute control over a son when it was young but also when it was old'
Cyto says 'even unto death'
Cyto says 'theoretically as long as the father was alive he held the childs life in his hands and could order the child to do anything'
Cyto says 'now society wouyldn't allow this to be taken too far'
Cyto says 'or abused too much but that was the idea, the father brought you into the world and he could take you out, you were basically his property or not necessarilly distinct from him'
Cyto says 'there was basically no regard for life as something precious unto itself'
Cyto says 'babies that were undesired were often left in the collisseum'
Cyto says 'i believe christians even then would come adopt them'
Cyto says 'but there would be others who would come to, slavers and pimps who would come to raise the kids to seell them into prostitution sometimes at a VERY young age or just use them as slaves'
Cyto says 'in every way imaginable life was not respected'
Cyto says 'well maybe some way that i'm not imagining'
Cyto says 'so what God says about parent child relationships is something of a departure'
Cyto says 'he says Children obey your parents '
Cyto says 'now I've heard over the past couple of weaks that when it says children obey your paretns it uses the word Teknon meaning small child'
Cyto says 'whereas when it says honor your parents it uses a word that could be more generic'
Cyto says 'the speaker there was implying that there comes a time when honoring your parents doesn't necessarily mean obeying them, I'm not sure if thats a valid exegesis and i'm going to ahave to looki into it mor emyself but that is out there'
Miriam says 'sorry I'm fading really fast.  having a hard time staying awake'
Cyto says 'God Puts restrictions on the parents as well as the children, parents don't anger your children.  So there is a responsibility on each side and there is also a time when the child has some responsibility apart from the aprents and in some interpretations it might be time to assert some independence'
Cyto says 'okay one more point of interest'
Cyto says 'it says athat a man was to leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife'
Cyto says 'now while a mans loyalty would be to his parents a wives would be to her husband so even if the husband were to go to be with the wives family both children would have some level of separation from the authority of the parents yet THe bible was careful to mention that the obligation to take care of the parents when they were odl was still there'
Miriam nods.
Cyto says 'showing the pharisees perverseness in abandoning them pretending to serve God, though pointing out that that didn't mean the kids should store up for them their whole lives rather indicating the parents duty to store up for the child, so it gives a healthy balance'
Cyto says 'okay thats it for tonight'
Cyto says 'peace and blessings'
Cyto says 'God please bless this to us tonight'
Cyto says 'say and help us get something out of it through the week'
Cyto scratches Miriam behind the ears.
Miriam softly says amen.
Cyto says 'i realize that was kinda dense'
Cyto says 'but there was a lot of background'
Miriam says 'I'm just really tired tonight.  that's the kind of material I actually like'
Cyto beams a smile at Miriam.
